On September 14, 2018, Hurricane Florence made landfall near Wrightsville Beach, North Carolina. Over the course of five days, Florence dumped an estimated 10 trillion gallons of water on the Carolinas— smashing rainfall records. Dozens of deaths were attributed to the storm; communities were inundated, and thousands of homes were damaged or destroyed by rising waters.

Recovery will be a long and challenging journey for the thousands of individuals and families who suffered devastating losses during Hurricane Florence. In the weeks and months to come, we'll continue our relief efforts and develop longer-term recovery plans.

You Make Our Work Possible

As of March 14, we have:

Served over 1.6 million meals and snacks with our partners

Provided over 129,700 overnight stays in shelters with partners

Distributed over 337,500 relief items like diapers and comfort kits that contain deodorant, toothbrushes, and toothpaste

Provided 52,800 mental health and health contacts to provide support and care to evacuees

During the Saturday morning meeting in Fayetteville Headquarters, Julian Delgado with Health Services explains to volunteers the process of properly administering Narcan to clients who may need it in shelters. When flood waters come rushing from below, pavement roads are forced to collapse. Large sinkholes threaten the towns of Southeast North Carolina. Cars can be totaled in minutes if extreme caution is not practiced while driving in town.

Cameron came with his mother Alicia and sister Marlana to help bring 20 meals to their neighborhood for those who cannot leave their houses. This family thanked the Red Cross for coming to town. “In the Fayetteville news all you see is crime, since the hurricane happened, you see people helping people. It’s a nice change.”

Ariday, seven-years-old, and Randy, eleven-years-old, ran out of their front yard in their Red Springs’s home when they saw the Red Cross truck pull up. Along with their mother Yadira and three adorable dogs, they received hot dinners for their family.

Vincent and Jennifer Baker live with their three daughters ages eight, ten, and twelve in Spring Lake, North Carolina and are still without power two weeks after Hurricane Florence, making it difficult to keep food in the house. “The Red Cross delivered hot meals to us last night and came back to give us MRE’s today, now you are back again!” Volunteers delivered clean up kits to the Baker family and their neighbors to help them recover.

September 26, 2018. Raeford, North Carolina.

Hurricane Florence came tearing through Raeford, North Carolina leaving the town devastated. Everything from furniture to clothes are at the curbs of most homes, showing that they have lost everything. Red Cross trucks pulled up to neighborhoods in Raeford delivering MRE’s, clean up kits, rakes, shovels, bleach, garbage bags and much more to help with the cleaning up of homes that are still destroyed from the storm.
